Mercedes ML / GLE (W166, 2012-2019): The Parts Owners Replace Most

The W166 is the generation of Mercedes SUV that most Indian owners know as the ML-Class (launched around 2011-2012) and, after the 2015 facelift, the GLE. It is a big, heavy, comfortable car, and after several years on our roads a familiar set of parts starts to wear. This guide groups those parts by system, so you can tell what is a normal wear item and what deserves a closer look.

It is a general guide, not a fault list for your exact car. Engines, trims and equipment vary between the ML 250 BlueTEC, ML 350 and the GLE variants, so always confirm fitment before ordering.

Engine and drivetrain mounts

Engine mounts carry a heavy engine, and rubber and hydraulic mounts both age. The usual signs are extra vibration at idle (especially in Drive with the AC on), a thud when you shift between Drive and Reverse, or the engine rocking visibly when it starts. A worn mount also puts extra strain on hoses, pipes and wiring around it.

Some mounts on these cars are hydraulic, and some versions carry a sensor or electrical connector. Check what your car has before buying, because a mount that looks the same can be a different part.

Suspension and steering

Stabiliser bar and links

A rattle or clunk over speed breakers and broken patches is often a stabiliser link or bush. These are common, low-cost wear parts, and replacing them usually quietens the car noticeably. Replace links and bushes as a pair across the axle.

Air suspension, where fitted

Some W166 cars were sold with air suspension and some with conventional springs. If yours has air springs, a car that sits low on one corner overnight, or a compressor that runs for a long time, points to a leak. Do not keep driving with a compressor running constantly, because the leak will eventually wear the compressor out too. Our earlier guide on air suspension sagging covers how to narrow it down.

Suspension, steering and brake work is safety-critical. Please have it fitted by a qualified technician, and have the alignment checked afterwards.

Engine top end

Cylinder head (valve) cover leaks

If you smell hot oil after a drive, or see oil residue around the top of the engine, the cylinder head cover or its gasket may be seeping. This is a common age-related issue on many European engines. Catch it early, because oil leaking onto belts, hoses and wiring does more damage over time.

Body, lights and trim

Tail lights

Tail lights fail through moisture getting in, cracked lenses or faulty bulb carriers and LED sections. Left and right units, and outer and inner (tailgate-mounted) units, are separate parts. Pre-facelift and facelift cars also look different at the rear, so match the exact unit to your year.

Bumpers and cut-outs

Front and rear bumpers take most of the damage on Indian roads. When ordering a bumper cover, check the cut-outs for parking sensors, fog lights, headlight washers and the camera on your car, as they differ between trims and years.

Small interior parts

AC vents, door handles, window switches and mirror parts are the small, everyday items that tend to break on any car of this age. They are usually simple to replace, and a good fitment match matters more than anything else.

How to match the right part

  • Note your make, model, year and chassis code (W166 for the ML and GLE, but check the facelift year).
  • Match the OEM number from the old part or from your VIN-based parts lookup.
  • Check the side (left or right), the engine and whether your car has options such as air suspension, a camera or sensors.
  • Compare the old part with the new one before fitting.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ML W166 the same car as the GLE W166?

They are the same generation. Mercedes renamed the ML to GLE with the 2015 update, which brought some cosmetic and equipment changes. Many parts are shared, but not all, so match by year and OEM number.

Which parts should I replace first?

Fix anything that affects safety or causes further damage first: suspension and steering parts, oil leaks and engine mounts. Cosmetic and comfort items can wait.

Can I replace these parts myself?

Switches, vents, lights and trim are often manageable with basic tools. Mounts, suspension, steering and brake parts should be fitted by a qualified workshop.
