Stabiliser Bar & Links: Clunks Over Bumps and Body Roll on Corners

You turn off a smooth road onto a broken one and hear a dull knock from a front corner. Or the car feels floppier than it used to when you take a roundabout. On many European cars, a worn stabiliser bar link or bush is the cause, and it is one of the cheaper suspension faults to put right.

What the stabiliser bar does

The stabiliser bar (also called an anti-roll bar or sway bar) is a steel bar across the front or rear axle. It links the left and right suspension so the car leans less in corners. The bar is held to the body by rubber bushes and joined to the suspension by short rods called drop links (stabiliser links). The links have small ball joints at each end, and those joints wear out first.

Signs of a worn link or bush

  • A light clunk or rattle over speed breakers, potholes and uneven patches, usually from one corner.
  • A knock when turning the steering at low speed, for example in a parking lot.
  • More body lean in corners, or a vague, loose feel on the highway.
  • A squeak or groan from the front on slow bumps, which often points to a dry or perished bush.
  • Uneven or noticeable play when a technician pushes the link by hand.

These signs overlap with other faults such as worn control arm bushes, ball joints, strut mounts or shock absorbers. Do not assume it is the link before it is checked.

How to confirm it

A workshop will lift the car and shake each link by hand to check for play in the ball joints. They will also look for cracked or split rubber boots, a bar that moves in its bushes, and corrosion on the link ends. You can do a simple first check yourself: with the car safely parked, push the body down at each corner and listen for a knock. This is only a hint, not a diagnosis.

Get the car looked at on a proper lift. Never work under a car held only by a jack.

What to replace

  • Drop links: the most common wear item. Replace both left and right on the same axle so the car feels even.
  • Bar bushes (rubber mounts): replace if they are split, hardened or the bar can be moved by hand inside them.
  • The bar itself: rarely needed unless it is bent, cracked or badly corroded.

Stabiliser links are part of the suspension, so have a qualified technician fit them and tighten them correctly. A wheel alignment is usually not needed for links alone, but ask your workshop if other suspension parts are being changed at the same time.

Mercedes ML / GLE W166 and BMW notes

On SUVs like the Mercedes ML and GLE (W166), the links and bushes carry a heavy body, and rough Indian roads put them under constant stress. Cars with air suspension or active roll control may use different links, so match the part to your exact car. BMW models also differ between front and rear, left and right, and with or without adaptive suspension. Always check these details before ordering.

Before you buy: fitment checklist

  • Match by make, model, year and chassis code (for example W166 or F10).
  • Check whether you need a front or rear part, and left or right.
  • Compare the OEM number on your old part with the listing.
  • Note whether your car has air suspension, sport suspension or active roll control.

FAQ

Can I drive with a worn stabiliser link?

For a short time the car will usually still drive, but handling gets worse and the noise tends to grow. A completely failed link can leave the car leaning more and may knock into other parts. Get it checked soon.

Should I replace links in pairs?

Yes. Replacing both sides of the same axle keeps the car balanced, and the second link is usually close to failing as well.

Is the clunk definitely the stabiliser link?

Not always. Control arms, ball joints, strut mounts and shock absorbers can make similar noises. A workshop inspection is the only reliable way to be sure.
