Air Suspension Sagging on One Corner? Diagnosing Failed Air Springs & Struts

Walk out in the morning, find the car leaning with one corner sitting on its stop while the other three look normal, and half the diagnosis is already done. An air suspension system that loses height at a single corner overnight is leaking at that corner. The job is working out exactly where — and resisting the urge to order a compressor, because that is the part everyone talks about and rarely the one that failed first.

This guide covers what one-corner sag actually tells you, how to confirm it without a workshop, and what to check before you buy an air spring or strut for your Mercedes-Benz or any other air-sprung German car.

What one corner tells you that four corners don't

Air suspension faults sort themselves into two broad groups, and where the car sits is the clue.

  • One corner down, rest normal. Air is escaping from that corner — the spring itself, its pipe, or the valve that holds it sealed. The system can usually pump the car back up when you start it, which is why the fault often looks like it "fixes itself" and then comes back overnight.
  • Whole car down, or one axle down. More likely a supply-side problem: a tired compressor, a blocked filter or drier, a common valve, or a shared pipe. It can still be a leak, just a bigger or better-placed one.
  • Car sits at an odd height but holds it. Usually not a leak at all. Suspect a ride-height sensor, its linkage arm, or the control module's calibration.

Time matters too. A corner that sinks within an hour of switching off is a substantial leak. One that takes all night is a small perished spot in the rubber, and is generally the more expensive one to chase because it hides so well.

The usual culprits, in rough order of likelihood

1. The air spring (bag) itself

By far the most common. The rubber sleeve flexes millions of times, and once it ages it cracks — most often in the folds that roll over the piston, and at the crimped joints top and bottom. These cracks are invisible at normal ride height because the folded section is tucked away. Raise the car so the suspension hangs and the damaged area is exposed.

2. The pipe, fitting or valve block

The nylon air lines chafe where they pass through brackets and wheel arches, and the push-fit collets at each end can lose their grip after being disturbed. The valve block, meanwhile, holds each corner sealed with its own solenoid; a leaking solenoid seat drops one corner exactly the way a split bag does. Worth remembering before you condemn a spring on symptoms alone.

3. The compressor — usually a victim, not the cause

A leak makes the compressor run constantly to compensate. That overheats it and wears the piston ring, and eventually it fails too. If you have been driving on a sagging corner for weeks, budget for the possibility that you now need both. Fix the leak early and you usually save the compressor.

4. Ride-height sensors and links

A snapped sensor link or a corroded sensor makes the module think a corner is at the wrong height, so it holds it too high or too low. The car will not deflate overnight, though. If the height is wrong but stable, look here first.

5. The damper

On an air-sprung axle the spring carries the load and the damper controls wheel movement — two separate parts that happen to sit together. A worn damper causes a floaty, wallowing ride, knocking over bumps, and sometimes oil streaks down the body, but it does not make the car sag. If your car has electronically adjustable damping, the damper also carries a solenoid and connector, and a fault there raises a suspension warning without any loss of height.

Confirming it before you spend anything

  • Park level and note the gap from tyre to arch at all four corners, with a tape measure rather than by eye. Repeat after a few hours and again overnight. This alone separates a leak from a sensor fault.
  • Spray soapy water on the bag, the pipe fittings and the crimps with the car raised to its highest setting. Bubbles find leaks that no amount of staring will. Give it a couple of minutes — a slow leak takes time to froth.
  • Listen with the bonnet up shortly after switch-off. A hiss from the valve block area points at a solenoid rather than the corner itself.
  • Read the fault codes. Air suspension modules store useful data — compressor run time, target versus actual height per corner. A workshop scan is far cheaper than a wrong part.
  • Do not drive far on a collapsed corner. The bag can be shredded between the piston and the top mount, and the bump stop and damper take punishment they were not designed for.

One corner or both?

If one air spring has perished, the one on the other side is the same age and has done the same mileage. Replacing the pair on that axle is the sensible call, and it keeps the ride even. Dampers are stricter still: always replace shock absorbers in axle pairs, because a new damper on one side and a tired one on the other gives unpredictable handling and uneven tyre wear.

While the corner is apart, look at the top mount, the bump stop and the air line. They wear on the same timescale and are cheap to do at the same time.

Choosing the right air spring or strut

Air suspension parts are unusually specific, so check all of the following before ordering:

  • Front or rear, and which side. Front air struts are commonly handed; rear units are often the same part both sides, but never assume it.
  • Spring only, or complete strut assembly. Some platforms sell the air spring separately from the damper; on others they come as one sealed unit. Buying the wrong one wastes a delivery.
  • Air or steel. Plenty of models were sold with air suspension on some variants and conventional coil springs on others. Look at the car, not the brochure.
  • Electronic damping or not. If the damper you are removing has an electrical connector, you need the version with the solenoid. If it does not, you don't.
  • Your make, model, generation and build year — and then the OEM number stamped on the old part. Facelifts change part numbers mid-generation, so the OEM number is the only thing that settles it. If you cannot read yours, send us your VIN or chassis number and we will confirm fitment before you order.

After fitting

Depressurise the system before disconnecting anything, and support the vehicle properly on stands. Torque the mounting bolts with the suspension loaded at normal ride height rather than hanging free, so the bushes are not pre-stressed. Once everything is back together, run a ride-height calibration with a diagnostic tool and clear the stored codes — most systems will not settle correctly until you do.

Short answers to common questions

Can a leaking air bag be repaired?

Patches and sleeve kits exist, but the rubber that split once is old everywhere. On a part that holds pressure under load, a repair is a short-term measure at best.

Is converting to coil springs a good idea?

It removes the leak and the compressor, and it is cheaper up front. You lose the self-levelling and the adjustable ride the car was designed around, and on many models the module keeps flagging a fault unless it is coded out. Fine on an older car you plan to keep simple; a poor trade on a newer one.

How long should air springs last?

There is no fixed interval — it depends on climate, road surface and how much the system cycles. In practice they tend to become a talking point once the rubber has aged well past the first decade, and Indian road and heat conditions do not help.
