Rear Electric Shock Absorber for MERCEDES-BENZ ML-CLASS W166 (2012-2015) Active Suspension Strut
On an air-sprung rear axle the load is carried by the air spring, while this shock absorber controls how the wheel moves. The two work as a pair — the spring sets ride height, the damper keeps the tyre in contact with the road and stops the body from floating or crashing over bumps. Where electronically adjustable damping is fitted, this unit carries the solenoid and connector the control module uses to vary damping on the move.
Check before ordering
- This is the rear damper for the air-sprung rear axle with electronic damping control. A conventional steel-spring rear damper for the same platform is a different part and is not interchangeable.
- If the damper you are removing has no electrical connector on it, you do not need this unit.
- The same part serves both the left and right rear positions.
Symptoms of a worn rear shock absorber
- Floaty, wallowing ride with the body continuing to move after a bump.
- Knocking or clunking from the rear over broken surfaces.
- Oil weeping or streaking down the damper body — a blown seal.
- Uneven or cupped tyre wear on the rear axle.
- Excessive squat when the boot is loaded, and body roll through corners.

- Hardened, chrome-finished piston rod running in a multi-lip seal pack to keep oil in and dirt out.
- Valve stack calibrated to original damping characteristics, so ride quality and electronic damping control stay correctly matched.
- Corrosion-protected tube with original mounting eye and bush dimensions for a direct bolt-in fit.
- Sealed connector to the original pin layout, so the factory harness plugs straight in.
Installation notes
- Depressurise the air suspension system before working on the axle, and support the vehicle properly on stands.
- Always replace shock absorbers in axle pairs. A new damper on one side and a worn one on the other gives unpredictable handling and uneven tyre wear.
- Inspect the air spring, top mount and bump stop while the damper is out — they wear on the same timescale, and a worn damper shortens the air spring's life.
- Torque the mounting bolts with the suspension loaded at normal ride height, not hanging free, so the bushes are not pre-stressed.
- Run a damping calibration with a diagnostic tool afterwards and clear stored fault codes.
Maintenance
Dampers wear gradually, so the decline is easy to miss until the ride is clearly poor. Replacing the rear dampers and the rear air springs together is usually the cheaper route, because each one shortens the other's life once it is worn.
