The front air suspension strut is a complete corner unit combining the damper and the air spring in one assembly. Air pressure inside the bellow carries the vehicle's weight in place of a coil spring, while the integrated damper controls wheel movement — so the ride-height control module can raise, lower and level the body while still managing damping.
Air suspension only — check before ordering
- This platform was built with two completely different front suspensions. One uses this air strut; the other uses a conventional steel coil spring with a separate gas shock absorber. They are not interchangeable, and the conventional damper is listed separately.
- Look at the front strut on the vehicle: an air strut has a rubber bellow and an air line running to it. If you can see a coil spring wound around the damper, you need the conventional shock absorber instead.
- The same part number serves both the left and right front positions on this platform — the front strut is not side-specific here.
Symptoms of a failed front air suspension strut
- The corner sits low, or the vehicle leans to one side, after being parked overnight.
- Suspension warning message on the instrument cluster, often with the system locking at a fixed height.
- The compressor runs far longer than normal or cycles repeatedly, trying to make up for the leak.
- Visible cracking, perishing or chafing on the rubber bellow, most often around the folds.
- Oil weeping down the damper body, indicating a blown damper seal.
- Knocking or clunking over bumps, and a floaty or crashy ride.

- Multi-ply rubber bellow with cross-woven cord reinforcement for pressure retention and fatigue life.
- Ozone- and UV-resistant rubber compound, chosen for the heat cycling and road grime of underbody service.
- Hardened, chrome-finished piston rod running in a multi-lip seal pack to keep damping oil in and dirt out.
- Damping valve stack calibrated to original characteristics so the vehicle's electronic damping stays correctly matched.
- Crimped end caps and mounting interfaces machined to original dimensions for a direct bolt-in fit.
- Every unit pressure-tested and leak-tested before dispatch.
Installation notes
- Depressurise the air suspension system fully before removing anything. Never disconnect a pressurised air line.
- Support the vehicle on stands and take the load off the suspension before releasing the strut.
- Cut the air line square and clean before refitting. A ragged cut is the most common cause of a leak at a push-fit port.
- Renew the O-ring at the air line port rather than reusing it.
- Check the electronic damping connector and its loom for chafing while the strut is out.
- Always fit front struts as an axle pair. A new strut on one side and a tired one on the other gives uneven ride height and unbalanced damping.
- Run a full ride-height calibration with a diagnostic tool after fitting and clear stored fault codes.
Maintenance
Air struts are a wear item. Keep the bellow folds free of caked mud and road salt, avoid leaving the suspension fully lowered for long periods, and act on a slow-sagging corner early — a small leak left alone is what burns out the compressor and, eventually, the valve block.
