On most modern German cars the engine start/stop button is the one control you touch on every single journey. Press it, the car wakes up, and you drive off. So when it stops responding — or needs two or three jabs before anything happens — it is unsettling, and it usually happens at the worst possible moment.
The good news is that the button itself is a fairly simple, self-contained part, and on many cars it is one of the cheaper repairs in the cabin. The catch is that plenty of no-start faults look like a dead button but are actually something else. This guide walks through what the switch does, how to tell when it has genuinely failed, what to rule out first, and how to choose a replacement that fits your car properly.
What the start/stop button actually does
Despite the name, the push-start button is not a heavy-duty ignition switch. It does not carry starter-motor current. It is a low-current momentary switch — usually two contact pairs plus an LED backlight ring — that simply tells the car's body or access module that you would like to change ignition state. The module then checks that a valid key is inside the cabin, that the brake or clutch pedal is pressed, and that the immobiliser is happy, and only then energises the starter.
Understanding this matters, because it explains the failure mode. The part that wears out is mechanical: the contact dome under the button, the plastic plunger, and the solder joints on the small circuit board behind it. Tens of thousands of presses eventually flatten the dome and the switch becomes intermittent. The electronics behind it are usually fine.
Signs the push-start switch itself is failing
- You have to press harder, or press twice. The classic symptom. The dashboard wakes up eventually, but only on the second or third attempt, and often only if you push firmly in one particular spot.
- The button feels mushy or has lost its click. A healthy switch has a crisp, positive detent. A worn one feels soft, sticky, or sinks in slightly further than it used to.
- Intermittent behaviour that follows temperature. Worse first thing on a cold morning and better once the cabin warms up is a strong pointer at a tired contact rather than an electronic fault.
- The backlight ring is dead, dim or flickering while everything else on the dash lights up normally.
- The surface has worn through. On cars where the button carries a printed “START STOP ENGINE” legend or a chrome ring, the coating rubs off with use. Cosmetic, but it is often why owners replace an otherwise working switch.
- The car starts perfectly with the emergency key slot or key-in-holder method but not with a normal press — this points the finger squarely at the button.
Before you buy: what else causes a no-start
Fitting a new switch will not help if the fault lies elsewhere. Work through these first — they cost nothing to check:
A flat or weak key battery
If the car cannot detect the key, it will refuse to start no matter how well the button works. Most cars will let you hold the fob directly against the start button or a marked spot on the steering column to start on the backup coil. If that works, replace the key cell before anything else.
A tired vehicle battery
A car battery that is fine for lights and radio can still be too weak for the starter. Warning lights flashing on and off, a rapid clicking, or the dash going dark as you press are all battery symptoms, not switch symptoms.
The brake or clutch pedal switch
The car will not crank unless it sees the brake pedal pressed (automatic) or clutch pressed (manual). A failed pedal switch mimics a dead start button almost exactly. A useful tell: if your brake lights have also stopped working, or cruise control has stopped engaging, look there first.
Steering lock or gear selector position
An electric steering lock that has not released, or a selector not quite in P or N, will block starting. Rocking the steering wheel gently while pressing the button is the standard test.
If none of those explain it, and pressing the button harder makes a difference, the switch is the likely culprit.
Choosing the right replacement button
Start/stop buttons are not universal — even within one manufacturer. Between generations and facelifts the connector pin count, the housing clip pattern, the trim shape and the printed legend all change. A button from a facelift car often will not clip into a pre-facelift dashboard, and vice versa.
Before ordering, check three things:
- Your exact make, model, body code and year. Not just “BMW 5 Series” but, for example, an F10 or F11 built within a specific year range. The body code is on your registration document or the VIN plate.
- The OEM part number on the old switch. Prise the button out carefully and read the number moulded or printed on the back or on the connector body. Matching this number is the single most reliable way to get the right part.
- The physical form. Compare photographs of the listing against your own button — the shape of the surround, whether there is a chrome ring, the position of the legend, and how many pins are in the plug.
You will also see “old model” and “new model” variants for the same car. These reflect a mid-cycle change at the factory, so go by the OEM number rather than the model year alone if you are unsure. A good aftermarket switch will use the same contact rating and connector as the original, with an ABS or polycarbonate housing that matches the dash texture.
Fitting a new start/stop switch
On most cars this is a genuinely straightforward job — typically 15 to 30 minutes with basic tools.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal, or at minimum switch everything off and remove the key from the cabin. You are working near airbag and immobiliser wiring.
- Use a plastic trim tool, never a screwdriver, to release the surrounding trim. Metal tools mark soft-touch dashboard plastics permanently.
- Release the retaining clips on the button housing, then unplug the connector by pressing its lock tab — do not pull on the wires.
- Fit the new button, plug in, and test before you refit the trim. Check that it starts, stops, and that the backlight ring illuminates.
- Reconnect the battery. Some cars will want the windows or sunroof re-initialised afterwards; the owner's handbook covers the procedure.
No coding or programming is normally required, because the button is a dumb switch — the intelligence sits in the module it reports to. If a correctly fitted new switch still will not start the car, the fault is upstream and it is worth having the access or body module scanned.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with a sticky start button?
You can, but it will get worse, and the failure is progressive rather than sudden. Being unable to restart after a fuel stop is the usual way it ends. It is a cheap part — replace it early.
Does a failing button affect the auto stop-start system?
No. The engine auto stop-start function (which cuts the engine at traffic lights) is a separate system with its own dashboard switch. A worn ignition button has no bearing on it.
Is it worth cleaning the old button instead?
Sometimes. If the switch has simply picked up dust or a spilled drink, dismantling and cleaning the contacts can buy you time. But once the metal contact dome has physically flattened, cleaning will not restore the click, and replacement is the proper fix.
Should I buy OEM or aftermarket?
For a low-current switch like this, a well-made aftermarket unit that matches the original connector, contact rating and housing shape performs the same job at a fraction of the price. What matters far more than the badge is that the part number and physical fit are correct for your car.
